Default Coil whine in the 7970 OC 3GB edition?

I'm looking to order a Sapphire 7970 OC 3GB Dual-X edition from newegg. But unfortunately, the comments on that site all have one con in common - coil whine. While many people have had other problems with the card too, this is the recurring one in the comments. Is it a general defect of all the 7970 OCs? or is it just the particular ones that are causing problems? I was dead set to buy it, but now i'm not so sure, esp since they'll charge me for return costs, if I were to send it back. Can anyone help me regarding this issue?

It's not a defect at all, a lot of cards do it as it's an inevitable effect of the work which the voltage regulating circuits do .. my cards only do it in FEAR and HL2 wherein I can hear the noise, some other games make the cards hum a bit, but not really that audible. If you use the forum's search engine, you'll find a few threads discussing the issue of harmonic distortion ..

okay, so with a bit of luck I won't have this problem, hopefully.

Another question : when can I expect the driver issues to be resolved? practically everyone with a 7-series card seems to have this problem. and I don't want to face it after buying a card for $600** (tax ** shipping cost).

How long is a piece of string ?

Drivers take time to mature, it's been the same way with every single card made and released .. that's a question you'd have to forward to AMDs driver team, only they can give you 100% accurate information about drivers.

Also the rest of your rig is important (motherboard, chipset, etc) as it really depends on findind the best drivers that suit your configuration. With time, you will have more drivers and tweeks added to them for you to choose and try.

How can I contact the AMD driver team?

And this is my current setup :

    MSI 880GM-E41
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition @3.2GHz
Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6790 1GB
    Transcend 8GB 1333 RAM
Samsung SyncMaster 2243 21.5" LCD monitor
    Thermaltake Litepower 500W
3.5 TB of HDD space distributed among three HDDs of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB
    Logitech keyboard and mouse

Looking forward to upgrading it. planning on getting the following components.

    1. Sapphire HD 7970 OC Dual-X edition
    2. G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB(2x 4GB) 1600 MHz CL7
    3. Corsair HX850 80 Plus Silver 850w PSU
    4. Corsair Force Series GT SSDs (2 x 60GBs)
    5. ASUS ML229H IPS 5ms monitor

I'm open to suggestions about the upgrade.

You use their website and follow the links from their driver page for the Catalyst Feedback ..

    VGA card = great choice
PSU = perfect, nice units those .. am thinking of the HX or AX 850W myself
DDR3 = Nice and good CL rating
SSD = I went with the Corsair 90Gb Force3 model .. great drive, no complaints, W7 up in ~15seconds
Monitor = I hate anything ASUS LOL .. I bought the DELL in my signature, again, no complaints and it has a premium panel guarantee - no bad pixels out of the box or replaced until you get a perfect screen ...

Best game controller ? I use k/board & mouse personally .. Have you tried an XBox controller, they seem to be the choice of a lot of gamers ..

ASUS isnt my first choice either. I've been using Samsung all my life. but the new 850D 27" PLS is like $900. way to pricey for me. The ASUS has an IPS panel and also comes at a price around $200. I'll upgrade the monitor later, of course. The new Samsung SB970 looks really nice! Hope its not as pricey as the 850D.
I need a controller for FIFA cause many options can only be used with a controller, a keyboard doesnt suffice. I'm currently thinking of getting the Logitech F710 wireless controller, newegg price is $42, plus tax and shipping should be around sth like $55-$60.
Xbox controller has been ruled out because I'm adapted to the PlayStation controller style.
